Bos 88 by Charles Cumming

A well-written thriller which juggles between past and present. The action is focused on a British agent called Lachlan Kite who works for a shadowy Anglo-American agency that only a small circle of top secret intelligence officials know about, known as Box 88. When a colleague and friend, Xavier Bonnard, is found dead, it leads Kite into the dangerous territory of his past with Box 88. He soon finds himself being hunted by MI5 who suspects he’s involved with the Iranian terrorists linked to the Lockerbie bombing.

Despite being an old hand at his job, Kite’s skills are put to the test when he is kidnapped by an angry Iranian team. He tries to play it cool but his captors are not fooled, knowing his status with Box 88. Eventually he is given a choice: reveal the truth about what happened in France 30 years ago or watch his family die.

The story is fast paced and packed with delicious details as to how real spies operate. The writing is clear and concise and the plot is cleverly thought out. However, despite this it never quite gels with the characters and their motivations. The character of Kite is resourceful and likeable but he never fully emerges for the reader amidst this frenetic story.

This is a novel which is a welcome addition to the spy genre. It’s an ambitious coming of age tale combined with an Bos88 enthralling spy thriller and it’s easy to see why Charles Cumming is becoming a name to be reckoned with in this area of fiction.
